WARNING: If you have a weakness for introverts or men with a mysterious personality, you will get weak in the knees for Robert Pattinson’s intellectual, nihilistic character, Tyler Hawkins, in Remember Me.

Robert Pattinson is beautiful in this film, but you didn’t really need me to tell you that. After all, you’ve seen this guy before. For all you Twi-hards out there, you should know that he doesn’t need to be Edward Cullen to have total sex appeal. Team Jacob will soon realize that R. Pattz proves his worth as an actor and a stud without having supernatural powers. I don’t want to give away too much of the plot, but this movie is really about love, the importance of family, and living a passionate life like each day is the last.

We can’t always relate to family tragedies like a suicide, or a parent figure passing away, but anyone with a heart can grasp the importance in a relationship between two people who have shared and suffered through similar fates. Sometimes we get too caught up in our own heads to remember the purpose of life and it takes having a special connection with one person to remember that our existence is not pointless- that who you are and what you do in life does actually matter.

bildeI’ve never been a fan of Robert Pattinson. That assessment is based on the actor’s most famous role to date, the vampire Edward in the “Twilight” films. I thought he delivered wooden performances in both movies.

But after watching him in the new film “Remember Me,” I’m intrigued. He carried the movie from its shaky start to its heart-wrenching conclusion.

Unlike his “Twilight” co-star, Taylor Lautner, Pattinson is making brave career choices. While Lautner will soon be busy working on standard thrillers like “Abduction” or sure-fire blockbusters like “Stretch Armstrong,” Pattinson will bury himself in art-house films like “Bel Ami” and “Water for Elephants.”

Taking a cue from Johnny Depp, Pattinson peppers his resumé with iconic roles such as Edward and memorable characters like the one he played in “Remember Me.” He stars as Tyler, a rebel with a cause who has serious daddy issues.

His father, Charles Hawkins (played perfectly by Pierce Brosnan), is a rich, powerful businessman who spends most of his time in the office and less with his family. After a tragedy separates the Hawkins, Tyler and his sister, Caroline (the amazing Ruby Jerins), divide their time between their dad and newly married mother (the underused Lena Olin).

remembermefeature1Robert Pattinson’s instantaneous and often overwhelming star power is fantastic for the moment. But what happens when “The Twilight Saga” comes to a close and his herds of adoring fans find another up and comer to fawn over? If Pattinson has anything to do with it, he’ll have moved on from simply being a Hollywood heartthrob and have established himself as a reputable actor. Not only does Remember Me provide him with the opportunity to be remembered long after his claim to fame has come and gone, but it allows him to deliver a similarly important concept to moviegoers: the value of moving on but never forgetting.

Pattinson stars as Tyler, an NYU student struggling with a vast amount of demons he’s not quite sure really exist. It’s fortunate that Pattinson can’t relate to his character in two respects: he didn’t have a troubled youth and that disconnect made the role much more intriguing to tackle. During a roundtable interview he explained, “All the people who I’ve met who are troubled teenagers, you meet their family and their family is like, ‘I don’t know what to do. He’s just – I have no idea what his problem is.’” Tyler definitely has problems to work out, but a recent family tragedy further exacerbates the situation causing him to get unnecessarily heated and even violent.

Tyler finds solace in Ally (Emilie de Ravin), a peer with her own troubled past. A habit of indulging in dessert before eating the main course reflects the importance Ally places on living in the moment. De Ravin said, “I think a lot of her personality traits stem from losing her mother at a young age. Even the little things like the whole dessert thing, it’s just basically saying that why wait for things in life? Take hold of the day and enjoy it and respect it and appreciate it and appreciate the people around you and don’t be fearful of living.” Using her passion for life, Ally eases Tyler’s troubles and nestles into his heart. It took much more than rehearsal time to be able to convey the zeal behind that relationship on screen. “We spent a lot of time together just getting to know each other as people.” De Ravin added, “That’s why when we were actually shooting, everything just sort of fell into place and felt very natural and not contrived in any way.”

Emilie de Ravin’s role as Claire in the TV series “Lost” has lately caused fans to scratch their heads, but her turn starring opposite of Robert Pattinson in “Remember Me” has heads turning.

Namely, the pair share intensely intimate moments on the big screen, from their bold first kiss, to a (clothed) romp in the shower and beyond. When it came time to the film such physical chemistry, however, there were no moments or opportunities for Pattinson and de Ravin to “rehearse”: they just headed right in.

“When we [screen] tested together, there was no scenes involving kissing and obviously we didn’t test with a sex scene,” de Ravin laughed in her interview with HitFix. She mocked just how awkward such an audition process would become. “’We want to see another scene, so take off your clothes. We just want to see the chemistry, trust us, it’s O.K.’”

de Ravin said she joined the “Remember Me” cast quite “late in the game,” coming in as romantic lead Ally Craig, a role that was originally penned as a Hispanic character. A fine role for an… Aussie? Ally was revamped as a Queens, N.Y. native, but de Ravin notes that several main actors — including Pierce Brosnan and “Twilight” star Pattinson — aren’t U.S. natives either, except for Chris Cooper, who plays her dad in the film.

“Working in accents it just another layer to a character,” she says. “One idea was to do it really Queensy, but when I spent time in Queens before we started shooting, it was really interesting listening to girls in their mid-teens to their mid 20s. Younger generations’ accents are so not really there, kind of generic, but when you get older, it increases with age to the strength of the accent.”

Moving on from the continent of Australia to the island on “Lost,” de Ravin is loath to reveal any new details on Claire’s troubled character but mentions new twists to her role are “kind of continuous. [Claire's] really interesting this season. There’s a lot going on and there’s a lot that she’s discovering and bringing back and figuring out.”

NEW YORK – As one of the high-profile stars in the popular TV series Lost, Emilie de Ravin has endured more than her share of silly questions from inquiring minds.

Usually, she tries to be friendly and forthcoming, but the Australian actress makes an exception during a recent promotional interview for the movie Remember Me, which opens March 12.

In the romantic drama, de Ravin plays Ally, a New York cop’s daughter who ends up falling for Tyler, a rebellious college student played by Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson. The characters develop a relationship – to the chagrin of Ally’s protective father.

That’s great, but what was it like kissing Robert Pattinson, she’s asked?

“Come on,” says de Ravin as she rolls her eyes to dismiss the teen-mag type of query.

She had more to say about her Remember Me portrayal and working alongside Pattinson. For instance, she will admit that her decision to do the Pattinson vehicle had nothing to do with the actor’s involvement.

“His name might have been on the cover of the screenplay, but I didn’t associate him with the movie,” de Ravin admits.

However, she learned to appreciate his talents and his drive to be an actor, not a teen sensation. “He’s a very sort of normal, grounded, down-to-earth individual, and he’s not one of these people who’s doing this for the fame,” she says.

Neither is de Ravin. Besides, she never expected to get the part. Her Remember Me character went through a series of re-writes. Finally, the producers decided to go with de Ravin a month before shooting started last year.

That meant de Ravin, on hiatus from Lost, had to take a crash course on changing her dialect from Aussie to the Queen’s style of New York speak. Luckily, she felt comfortable with the general Ally persona.

“Ally’s full of life and she has an attitude,” de Ravin says. “But Tyler (Pattinson) is the first person she’s opened up to, and she’s more in touch with appreciating life.”

That’s the key theme to Remember Me, despite the love affair, the family tragedies and the emotional turmoil of loss.

“I think there’s a big message in the film: not being fearful of life,” de Ravin says. “I thought about this after reading the script for the first time, and I think it remains the main part of the film.

“The movie says, ‘Life is so hectic, and it’s so go-go-go, that it is important to take a second and think, ‘OK, I’m here today,’ and just appreciate the day for what it is.”

Well, the time is here. Remember Me finally opens Nationwide in the U.S. on Friday, including scattered midnight shows in some of the larger cities. Many of us have been waiting long before we watched him on the streets of New York and worried for his safety with those wretched sorority row she-devils who tried to hump him in front of 80 million paparazzi cameras.

9-months later, one cab that may or may not have bumped the holy Pattinson knee, a gazillion Twitter-devil sightings, thousands of mentally-challenged journalists who still think we’re all little 12-year-olds and a fandom that seems to split more regularly than a cell filled with the C-word, Remember Me is ready to hit theaters.

The question now is will YOU be there? Some movie-industry “insiders” and tracking devices seem to think not. Studio executives and the crotchety old prognosticators are obsessed with opening weekend box office and while I’d like to say phooey to all of them, opening weekend is important for a reason. There are a hot ton of factors that play into why, but the main one is that Hollywood only speaks box office and the opening weekend will be a significant indication of the money Remember Me will likely make. And the more money it makes the more word-of-mouth it will get, and the more of a success it will be called.

New Moon opened to a $140.7 million dollar weekend because…well, it’s the dun dun dun, Twilight Saga New Moon. But Remember Me was never intended to be Twilight 3: The New York city Edward Smokes And Fucks A Lot Interlude. Remember Me was never going to have corny crowns at Burger King, shirtless puppies, silly Remember Me lipstick or Chris Cooper sexy beast cardboard cutouts.

Hey, I’d buy the cut out. Just sayin’. But you know what I mean. (more…)
